Divorcing With Special Needs Children Workshop

Divorce

Here at Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, we understand the stress involved throughout the divorce process. A lot of different factors are taken into account, such as financial woes, addiction/substance abuse, having children with special needs, etc.

On October 26, 2017, Lloyd Rosen, a senior associate at Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, held our monthly workshop for mental health professionals on the subject of divorcing parents of special needs children.

Mr. Rosen discussed the impact that a special needs child can have on a marriage. He also went on to speak about special legal arrangements for divorcing parents with a special needs child, as well as how to efficiently plan for the child’s needs during a divorce. A few key factors that were discussed include whether the child has had an official diagnosis and who the primary caregiver is. One must start collecting medical records, therapy records, and educational records as soon as possible as well as list the names and contact information of all people the child currently sees for his or her condition. Listing the medications the child takes and the therapy the child receives also is important. Having information like this can alleviate the burden of divorce with proper strategies that help anticipate future needs.

Walking through the process with an attorney proves to be very beneficial. It enables the parents to garner insight on what to expect during the divorce process and allows for efficient planning.

Attorney Lloyd Rosen has substantial knowledge and experience divorcing with special needs children. For any questions about our upcoming workshops, please call (516)-773-8300 or email sharyn@lawjaw.com.
